The Big Idea

Capture is a multi-city, community sourced filmmaking project that happens simultaneously over a 72 hour period.

How Does It Work?

Two or more cities work to organize and direct the event in coordination with each other.

Each cities’ Capture project leadership will engage their citizens to become Capture Community Filmmakers who will contribute video to the project.

Each city forms two Capture Film Editing Teams. The teams use the community contributed video to create their final Capture films for exhibition and jurying. The teams consist of:

  • One Lead Film Editor
  • One Assistant Film Editor (optional)
  • One composer, musician or group of musicians (formal band or collaborations)

The film editing team members can consist of existing professional film creative teams, or be formed to specifically participate in the Capture project. The music portion of the project teams may consist of existing bands, collaborating musicians, solo artists or studio composers.

City Capture Project Leadership

A single organization or coalition of organizations within a Capture partner city can produce the project. In either case, one individual should be designated in a leadership role. This helps with coordinating and simplifying communications and shared operations.

Established non-profit organizations whose missions deal with the applied arts, specifically film, video and visual communication, and those whose missions are rooted in technology, community engagement through the visual arts and the expansion of technological connectivity in communities are best suited for the Capture project.

Example organizations:

Film and media societies, technology providers and community engagement nonprofits, visual arts organizations.

The City

The Capture project is rooted in the art of visual communication. It is a large-scale filmmaking project. It also has deep roots in technology and the idea that technology can enable artistic expression. Fiber optic, gigabit internet connectivity is a key factor for the multi-city collection and is used in the sharing and distribution of community video and the Capture Team final films for exhibition.

Capture leverages community creativity and high-speed, fiber optic connectivity to produce a unique, multi-city filmmaking event. Therefore, the cities where Capture is produced must have this high speed connectivity infrastructure, and just as important, the ability to access its power.

Team and Production Support

  • Musicians will be provided a one-half (½) day access to a recording studio in their city. The musician(s) may use her/his own studio if that is a preferred option.

  • Film Editors will be oriented and provided access to a central server distribution scheme to access the Community Filmmaker video uploads for ingest. Film Editors will be provided instructions on where their final films will be delivered via a secure server.

Capture Promotions and Advertising

Each city is expected to promote Capture on three main fronts:

  • Promoting community engagement and registrations of the general community to be video footage contributors.
  • Promotion of the Friday Kick-Off Event (free event).
  • Promotion of the Sunday Capture Premiere Event (ticketed event).

Promotions should begin three months prior to the Capture kick-off event.

Lead organizations and project leadership should use their media assets to get the word out. Newsletter distribution, social media campaigns (paid and organic), traditional media campaigns, video and audio interviews, poster creation and distribution all combine for a complete effort.

Partnering with local media for in-kind sponsorship within a city is encouraged. We have had great success securing media interviews with representatives from each city about Capture.
